The formulation

Shānta

शान्त

Nine plants for capacity that does not spike. Shānta means settled. It is an unusual name for a formulation of this kind, and it is the whole argument: capacity that arrives steadily and stays, rather than an afternoon of borrowed energy paid back the same evening.

ii. the nine

Every plant, and why it is here

Nine plants, each doing something.

  • 01Root

    Maca

    Lepidium meyenii

A brassica that grows at four thousand metres on the Peruvian puna, in cold and wind that almost nothing else tolerates. It is not Ayurvedic and we do not pretend otherwise. It is also the smallest inclusion here but one — forty milligrams is a supporting quantity, not a headline, and calling it anything else would be the kind of claim this label avoids.

    Role
Andean, and present in a small quantity
    Origin
    Junín · 4,000–4,400 m
    Virya
    heating
  • 02Root

    Shatavari

    Asparagus racemosus · शतावरी

A thorny climber with a crown of finger-thick tuberous roots — shatavari means a hundred roots, and a mature crown genuinely carries that many. It is the one cooling plant among several heating ones. A formula built only from what warms is a formula that runs hot, which is a thing you feel by the third week.

    Role
    The cooling counterweight
    Origin
    Chikkaballapur, Karnataka
    Virya
    cooling
  • 03Fruit

    Gokharu

    Tribulus terrestris · गोक्षुर

A low weed of dry ground with a fruit that splits into five spined burrs — gokshura, the cow's hoof, for what it does to one. It grows anywhere and is therefore easy to buy badly; the compounds vary enough by region that where it grew matters more than most suppliers admit.

    Role
    The classical pairing for musli
    Origin
    Kutch, Gujarat
    Virya
    cooling
  • 04Stem

    Guduchi

    Tinospora cordifolia · गुडूची

A climber that drops aerial roots like threads from whatever it grows over, and will regrow from a cut stem left on the ground. The stem is the part used, not the leaf. Its classical name is amrita — the nectar of immortality — which is a large claim from a tradition otherwise given to precision, and it has kept the name for two thousand years.

    Role
The one the texts call amrita
    Origin
    Vidarbha, Maharashtra
    Virya
    heating
  • 05Tuber

    Vidarikand

    Pueraria tuberosa · विदारीकन्द

Indian kudzu — a vine over a tuber that can reach the size of a person and takes three years to be worth lifting. Twenty milligrams is a small amount of it, and it is here for the same reason a small amount of anything is: the classical pairing calls for it alongside varahikand, and leaving it out to round the numbers would make a different formula.

    Role
The smallest quantity in the formula
    Origin
    Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh
    Virya
    cooling
  • 06Tuber

    Varahikand

    Dioscorea bulbifera · वाराहीकन्द

The air potato — a climbing yam that sets tubers on the vine as well as under the ground. Varahi means boar, for the animal that digs it up. It is one of the two largest quantities here and one of the oldest inclusions in this kind of preparation, used as the body a formulation is built on rather than as a note within it.

    Role
Bulk and ballast, in the classical sense
    Origin
    Kolhapur, Maharashtra
    Virya
    heating
  • 07Root

    Ashwagandha

    Withania somnifera · अश्वगंधा

The name means the smell of a horse — for the odour of the fresh root, and for the steadiness it was said to lend. We use only the root, never the leaf, and only from plants left in the ground a full winter. Younger roots yield more weight and less of what we are after.

    Role
The steadying end of the formula
    Origin
    Nagaur, Rajasthan · 300–400 m
    Virya
    heating
  • 08Root

    Tongkat Ali

    Eurycoma longifolia

A slender understorey tree whose root is dug at eight years or later — younger roots are thinner and cheaper and are most of what is sold. It comes from Malay and Indonesian practice, not from Ayurveda, and we would rather name that than blur it. It is here because it is the most studied plant in this formula for the thing the formula is for.

    Role
The largest inclusion, and the least Ayurvedic
    Origin
    Pahang
    Virya
    heating
  • 09Tuberous root

    Safed Musli

    Chlorophytum borivilianum · श्वेत मूसली

A cluster of white fleshy roots under a plant that looks like nothing at all above ground. It is peeled and dried by hand because a machine breaks the root and the broken pieces darken. Classical texts place it among the vajikarana preparations, which is the category this whole formula sits in.

    Role
Rasayana, in the strict sense of the word
    Origin
    Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh
    Virya

iii. where it comes from

Sourcing

Paid by the year, not the kilogram.

Independent tests per batch
  1. Pahang, Malaysia

    Eight years underground

Tongkat ali is the largest inclusion here, and the difference between a four-year root and an eight-year one is most of what you are paying for. Younger roots are thinner, cheaper and are the great majority of what is sold. We buy from smallholdings in Pahang that lift at eight to ten years, which means committing to a grower years before there is anything to collect.

  2. Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh

Peeled by hand, because a machine breaks it

Safed musli is peeled and dried by hand. A machine is faster and it fractures the root, and fractured pieces darken and lose grade. We contract with the same growers in Jhabua each year rather than buying by the lot, which costs more and is the only way to know whose hands did it.

  3. Tested before and after

Every incoming lot is screened for heavy metals, pesticide residue and microbial load. Every finished batch is tested again for identity and marker compounds. Two tests, because raw material passing is not the same as the finished capsule passing.

iv. how to take it

The ritual

Two capsules, once a day, after a meal.

  1. Once daily

Two capsules, twenty minutes after a meal

Once a day, not twice. Most of this formula is heating, and it sits better against food than ahead of it — twenty to thirty minutes after, with a full glass of water. Milk if you have it, which is what the texts specify and what makes the tikta plants easier to take.

  2. The same hour

Pick an hour and keep it

Which hour matters far less than whether it is the same one. The formula is cumulative, so the variable that decides the outcome is how many days you actually take it — and a fixed hour is the only thing that reliably fixes that.

  3. Eight weeks

Give it two containers before you judge it

One container is fifteen days, which is not long enough to tell you anything. Vajikarana preparations are built to accumulate; the classical course is measured in months. If nothing has changed after eight weeks, it is reasonable to conclude it is not for you.

v. what people say

Unedited, and not all of them flattering

Six weeks in, mostly.

  • I had written off this whole category. What changed my mind was that nothing happened for a month — and then, quietly, the fourth set stopped being the one I skipped.

    Anaya R. · Bengaluru · nine months
  • I asked for the test reports expecting to be ignored. They arrived the same afternoon, for my batch, with the markers highlighted. That told me more than the label did.

    Vikram S. · Pune · four months
  • Fifteen days a container is genuinely annoying and I have said so. What kept me was that the second container felt like a continuation rather than a restart.

    Meera J. · Ahmedabad · a year
  • No spike, no crash, nothing you could point at on any given afternoon. I have come to read that as the product working rather than as it failing.

    Daniel O. · London · seven months
